Content Management

Do you need a Content Management System or a standard website?

CMS systems were created to answer a problem. And that problem is continuous information publication and updating. Some companies have ever changing information they need to publish and distribute to either their employees or to the general public. Individuals may need such a system if they are publishing content on a regular basis.

What is referred to as a “website” is not a suitable platform for such a system. Most websites are static in the sense that once the information is published it will rarely change or need updating. When it does need updating a web professional can be called upon to do the changes in a short period of time and no one is needed on staff to maintain the site. Most companies do not want Web Designers or Web Programmers sitting around waiting for a site change it’s a huge expense! However if your content is changing you may want to consider a CMS versus a web site. These systems are fairly easy to learn and operate and you do not need to be a programmer or designer to use them, you need to be an information writer. Most companies have someone within the company who is already writing marketing material and it is usually this person or department that would be in charge of the CMS.

Once example of use for a CMS is a company portal. A portal is a site either internal or external that users be it employees by signing in or the general public can access and obtain lots of information about the company.  CNN, FOX, Google, Yahoo are all portals. Think of them in terms of your company but as a private portal with news and information. Maybe your information does not change as often as these portals but you may have a lot that needs to be distributed.

So a CMS is in fact a web site but it is arranged such that a company or individual can publish their own information without the need of a Webmaster. A company can publish contacts, forms, reports, news, calendars, events and the list goes on. Information can be restricted to certain users and other information can be public. So your Website can be visible to the public and also have sections that are private to your employees.

VisionBay can design and implement a cost effective CMS system for you and advise you on what path to take. We will work with your staff to obtain your initial information then create your site and publish your contents. At this point we will train your staff on use of the system and they will be able to maintain it. Things generally run smoothly after this but should you need support in adding modules or solving problems VisionBay is there to help.
